Help your international team work in Japanese

Self-paced Japanese and JLPT courses for your employees, and a dashboard that shows you who is on track. Built by Coto Academy, teaching Japanese in Tokyo and Yokohama since 2000.

What Is J-STANDARD

JLPT training for your employees, from a Tokyo language school

J-STANDARD is an online Japanese course for international employees, built with the JLPT in mind by Coto Japanese Academy. Employees study on the mobile app or in their browser, from complete beginner to N2, and HR follows their progress in a dashboard.

  • Teaching Japanese in Tokyo and Yokohama since 2000
  • More than 10,000 students taught, across five schools
  • The same curriculum as our classroom courses

The Language Gap

Your international hires speak English. Their work happens in Japanese.

Meetings, internal documents, client calls and lunch with colleagues mostly run in Japanese. Employees who can’t follow them stay on the edge of the team, and it shows in their growth, their confidence and how long they stay.

People who can join the conversation stay longer

Employees who can follow a meeting, read an internal notice or chat with colleagues over lunch feel part of the team, not just attached to it.

Language support is also a benefit candidates notice when they compare offers.

More of your team can work with Japanese clients

A JLPT level gives managers a shared, objective reference for who is ready for client-facing work, and who needs a few more months.

Some visa applications now ask for proof

For these visas, a JLPT certificate is one of the accepted ways to prove the required level. J-STANDARD prepares employees for exactly that level.

What Keeps Learners Going

Built so employees actually finish the course

The hardest part of any e-learning program is completion. J-STANDARD is designed so employees can keep going on their own, without a teacher chasing them.

Follows the JLPT syllabus

The kanji, vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening tested at each level, organized in the order they’re needed.

  • Full exam coverage for every level from N5 to N2
  • Learners save words to their own review list
  • Optional online lessons with Coto teachers to practice what they studied

Fits into a busy workday

No need for long study sessions. Ten minutes on the train or during a break still moves them forward.

  • Video lessons where Coto teachers explain nuance and real usage
  • Native audio for vocabulary
  • J-STANDARD mobile app, plus browser access on any computer

A clear next step, every day

Learners always know what to study today, so they set their own pace instead of waiting for instructions.

  • Study time and quiz scores shown as progress charts
  • Daily streaks that help build the habit
  • Pass one level, move to the next: N5, then N4, then N3

For HR and L&D Teams

Know your training budget is working

Every learner’s study time, progress and exam scores in one place. Learners who fall behind are flagged automatically, so you can step in before exam day.

  • Learners at risk flagged automatically: low exam scores, missed exams, low activity
  • Study time, progress, practice and unit exam scores for every learner
  • Progress reports and grades by learner and by level
  • Available in English and Japanese

FAQS

Yes. Companies use J-STANDARD to give their staff structured Japanese training that fits around work, with an admin dashboard for tracking how teams are progressing. It suits Japan-based teams and overseas offices working with Japanese colleagues, since everything is self-paced and remote.

Yes. The N5 course is built for people at the very start of their Japanese studies and assumes no previous classroom experience. It moves in small steps and tells you exactly what to do next, which is where most self-taught beginners get stuck. If you are completely new to the writing system, start with our free beginner resources and the dedicated hiragana and katakana section.

You just need to fill out the form above or use the contact button at the bottom of the page. Tell us how many learners you have and which levels they need, and we will send you a quote.

Most Japanese learning apps are built to keep people engaged. J-STANDARD is built to get them through an exam and master Japanese. It was made by a Japanese language school, so the material follows a real teaching sequence rather than a stream of disconnected exercises, and every level maps to what the JLPT actually tests. If your goal is a certificate, this is the more direct route.

Employees study on the J-STANDARD mobile app, or in a web browser on any computer or tablet. Short sessions work well on the phone, and longer ones, especially reading practice and typing drills, are more comfortable on a larger screen.
